Going home
Get ready to go home after you have your baby and learn about community supports.
Postpartum care
Before you go home, your care team will give you information about postpartum care for you and your baby.
You will need to rest for the first few weeks after your baby’s birth. It may be good to have family or friends help you.
Business office
The business office would like:
- to know if you have any insurance policies that will cover your costs (such as private room coverage)
- money or cheque to cover any fees for private rooms (if the costs are not covered by your insurance)
The business office is located in the main floor lobbies. If it is closed when you go home, the hospital will send you a statement with instructions on how to pay any outstanding fees.
The hospital appreciates if all payments are made at the time of your discharge.
Support from public health
If you live in the Edmonton zone, a nurse from your local public health clinic will contact you within 24 hours after you leave the hospital. The nurse will arrange to meet you in your home or on the phone. The nurse will ask about yourself and your baby and answer any questions.
If your baby’s newborn metabolic spot test was not done in the hospital, the public health nurse will collect the sample.
The nurse will come back to see you in your home or talk to you on the phone as often as you need. This is a free service. You can also call 811 for information and advice at any time of day or night.
Support from community health centres
Community health centres can offer:
- breastfeeding support
- immunization
- to weigh your baby
- new mother groups
- parenting groups
Check the centre nearest you for dates and times. You can call Healthy Beginnings at 780.413.7990 if you live in the Edmonton area and if you live outside the Edmonton area call Health Link at 811.
Community breastfeeding support
There are breastfeeding clinics for mothers having difficulties after they go home. Ask your health care provider for a referral if you are having problems. A breastfeeding clinic staff member will provide support and advice.
