This session will discuss the current evidence on antihypertensive use in frail older adults, practical tips on deprescribing antihypertensives, and the OptimizeBP randomized controlled trial.
Antihypertensive medication is prevalent in the frail older adult population, however observational evidence suggests blood pressure lowering may have limited benefit and could even be harmful in this population.
This session will discuss the current evidence on antihypertensive use in frail older adults, provide practical tips on deprescribing antihypertensives, and discuss the OptimizeBP randomized controlled trial, a deprescribing antihypertensive trial currently in progress in 22 long-term care facilities in Alberta.

About the presenter
Roni Kraut, CPA, MD, CCFP, MSc is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta. She works in community practice and long-term care. She is the PI of the OptimizeBP randomized controlled trial. Her research is focused on questions impactful to primary care including deprescribing, preventing overdiagnosis, population screening and vaginitis.
