When Norm Finlay moved to Edmonton, little did he know that his desire to serve would lead to a close connection with Covenant Health’s Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre.
“I was volunteering at a hospice in Cornwall, and I wanted to continue that work here,” Norm says. “But soon, I found myself involved in a range of activities (at the Edmonton General). From tea parties and bingo to outings and movie nights, I’m eager to lend a hand wherever it’s needed.”
Norm’s journey with Covenant Health began with a simple intention: to volunteer within walking distance of his new home, ideally at a hospice similar to the one he supported in Cornwall, Ontario. Yet what unfolded was a broader commitment to the Edmonton General, where his volunteer efforts now span various activities, embodying the spirit of selfless service.
At 67, Norm has life experience that is as rich and varied as the roles he embraces at the Edmonton General. He has lived in many provinces across Canada, including Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia and now Alberta. Despite his many interprovincial moves, the self-described Pan Canadian says one thing has remained constant — his commitment to volunteerism, which is driven by a deep-seated belief in service ingrained in his Catholic faith.
For Norm, volunteering is not just a duty but a joy ― a way to connect and become part of a larger community.
“Working with the residents and staff at the Edmonton General, I’ve found a second family,” he says.
“The appreciation from the residents and the team makes every moment worthwhile. It’s more than just volunteering; it's about the joy and fulfillment that come from making a difference.”
Norm says his bond with the Edmonton General community is strengthened by the support he receives from the site’s volunteer co-ordinator, Rossanna Reyes, who plays a crucial role in connecting volunteers with opportunities that match their passion and skills. He says Rose is the best volunteer co-ordinator he has worked with, and the program is well-structured and effective.
Norm’s advice to potential volunteers is heartfelt and straightforward. “Find a place where you can connect and contribute meaningfully. For me, that’s been the Edmonton General. It’s well-run, and the people make it special.”
As Norm continues to share his time and talents at the Edmonton General, he encourages others to explore the rich rewards of volunteering.
“Volunteering is not just about giving time; it’s about being part of a community that cares. It’s a way to live out my faith and values, and in the process, I’ve found joy and a sense of belonging that’s irreplaceable.”
