For Tobi Ikuepamitan, a senior advisor with Covenant’s web and digital team, digital work has always been about more than technology — it’s about connection, care and dignity.
Originally from Nigeria, Tobi began his career in digital communications there before moving to Toronto and, more recently, to Edmonton. “My work has always sat at the intersection of digital communication and experience, using technology to help people feel informed and supported,” he says.
Drawn to Covenant’s mission and values, Tobi joined the organization earlier this year. “I wanted to use my skills in a place where digital work isn’t just transactional, but where it contributes to care and community well-being,” he says. “At Covenant, what we do online connects directly to compassion, dignity and belonging.”
After almost a decade in Toronto’s fast-paced environment, Tobi and his family were ready for a change. The move to Edmonton has been both meaningful and grounding, he says. “Toronto is fast paced. Edmonton has given me space to build intentional relationships and connect with people who are more community oriented. It feels welcoming. People here care about each other, and that makes it easier to build real connections.”
That same sense of belonging has shaped his first six months at Covenant. “You can feel it — the compassion, the respect, the sense of belonging,” he says. “People don’t just talk about the values; they live them. Working here isn’t only about finishing tasks. It’s about serving people with purpose.”
Tobi believes that same spirit should shine through in Covenant’s digital work. “When we design a webpage or create an online experience, it’s not just about sharing information,” he says. “It’s about helping people feel supported and seen. Every digital interaction is a chance to show care.”
Earlier this year, Tobi was recognized nationally as one of the top five finalists for the Obsidi Awards, a program created by Canada’s Black tech community to honour excellence in digital innovation.
"Being recognized by my community — people who understand the journey and the barriers — means a lot. It’s a reminder to keep striving for excellence while also looking out for others. We rise by lifting each other."

When reflecting on Black History Month, Tobi says its lessons extend beyond February. “When I think of Black History Month, I see it as a month of honour and accountability, honour for those who paved the way and accountability to keep advancing the work they started, not just for the Black community, but for all minorities. Although the spotlight is on Black people, it’s a month for us to advocate for equity for everyone. It’s a seed. We plant it in February, but the goal is for it to grow all year.”
That idea of planting seeds also guides how Tobi approaches his work. As a Black professional in the tech space, he designs with inclusion at the core. “Being in the digital space has made me more intentional about who’s included and whose voice might be missing,” he says. “Inclusion can’t be an afterthought. It has to be built into the foundation. Until everyone is included, we’re not truly doing our best work.”
