Registered nurse Kayo Nakano has worked in the Misericordia’s emergency department for 16 years. She misses seeing people’s faces.
“Facial reactions are key to understanding people’s feelings. We triage people, they say they’re uncomfortable, but are we actually seeing their faces? Are we seeing the strain in their eyes?”
Kayo also misses seeing her loved ones. She has older parents and an immunocompromised niece with heart issues and does not want to risk exposing them to the virus.
“That’s the hardest part. Everyday patient care is the same, but it’s more the other stuff outside of work.
“In some ways it’s a benefit to be able to come here. In some ways it’s our social connection because we are going through the same thing with our colleagues. We’re in it together and we can support each other.”
