Chaplain Lyn Beddoes is still supporting patients, families and staff at the Misericordia Community Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.
With visitor restrictions and physical distancing guidelines in place, it’s become more challenging to offer in-person spiritual care to our patients, residents and their families.
Covenant Health’s spiritual care team has adapted how they continue to deliver these services, ensuring the same level of compassion and integrity, by offering a hybrid of telephone and in-person care, where it’s most appropriate.
Lyn recently supported a woman who did not visit her dying mother because she is immunocompromised. Her mother had unexpectedly lost consciousness during a lengthy hospital stay. She was not expected to survive the day.
The woman was distraught, but Lyn provided the support she needed, praying for both mother and daughter at the patient’s bedside. Holding the mother’s hand, Lyn put the phone to the mother’s ear so her daughter could say a final goodbye.
Even though the daughter was unable to be there in person, she felt a sense of peace knowing her mom wasn’t alone when she passed, says Lyn. She told Lyn she was grateful to have the opportunity, even from a distance, to connect with her mom in those final moments.
