While Nicole Tomie has changed positions a few times during her 18 years of working with Covenant Health, the one thing that has stayed the same has been the support of her co-workers, managers and the organization.
“From the top down, everyone lives the golden rule to treat people the way you want to be treated. My team and managers have always recognized that we all wear multiple hats — wife, mother, friend, employee — and supported us in and outside of work. I’ve never felt like just a number to anyone.”
Nicole began her career with Covenant Health as a secretary in the human resources (HR) team at the Misericordia Community Hospital until joining the corporate strategic recruitment team (now talent acquisition), where she was a talent acquisition advisor. Then last year, she made the leap to become a human resources client partner (HRCP), assisting operations management with collective agreement interpretations, union relations, risk assessment and decision-making. Through all the change, a supportive work environment and opportunities to learn and grow have made Covenant Health the workplace of choice for her.
“To have successfully received Alberta’s Top 80 Employers designation 10 times speaks volumes about the type of employer Covenant Health has been, currently is and continues to strive to be. I’m very proud to work for an organization that continues to prioritize its employees and recognizes them.”
Throughout her various roles, Nicole has used Covenant Health’s staff education fund, which allowed her to get her HR certificate and diploma and now to work towards a bachelor’s degree. Her manager also helped her receive mentorship for a position that would eventually become her current role.
Nicole says that transitioning from a general to a specialty role can be hard, but having her manager’s support helped her see that it was the direction she wanted to go and gave her the confidence to move forward when a full-time position became available.
“I loved my job at the time, but I knew that I was starting to lose creativity and that someone else could come in with a different and fresh perspective to see the gaps and provide new insights. Being set up for success in my new position meant I could open the door and do the same for someone else so they could have the same type of opportunity for growth.”
