Building the future of health care in Edmonton
Covenant Health is proposing to build two 350-bed towers at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital and the Misericordia Community Hospital, adding 700 urgently needed acute care beds to the health system in Edmonton.
The challenges
The solution: Two towers, one vision
- New Beds: +350 → 738 total
- Investment: $815 – 849M
- Tower Height: 13 levels
- Serving diverse, rapidly growing communities in southeast Edmonton.
- New Beds: +350 → 691 total
- Investment: $916M
- Tower Height: 10 levels
- Serving west and southwest Edmonton, the city's fastest-growing areas.
Why this matters
Shorter wait times
Adding 700 beds will reduce emergency department congestion and surgical backlogs across our growing city.
Care closer to home
Modern facilities in Edmonton's fastest-growing communities mean less travel time for patients and families.
Modern facilities
Single-patient rooms, improved infection control, and state-of-the-art design that meets today's healthcare standards.
Expanded services
More capacity for critical programs: mental health care, surgical services, cardiac care, rehabilitation, and palliative care.
3,000+ new jobs
Approximately 3,000 full-time healthcare positions across clinical and support services.
Smart investment
700 beds for $1.7–1.8 billion — 60% more capacity than the cancelled South Edmonton Hospital at significantly lower cost.
