G.F. MacDonald Centre for Lung Health
We help people with chronic lung disease return to their highest possible breathing function and quality and life. This includes helping you:
- manage your illness
- slow the progression of your illness
- maintain your independence
- decrease your need to visit the emergency department and spend time in hospital
Breathe Easy Program
This program is designed to help you improve your health and quality of life through education, exercise and support.
Our education sessions will teach you how to manage your disease, control your breathing and recover more quickly. Topics include medication use, when to seek medical help, energy conservation, nutrition and more.
Exercise is tailored to your abilities and needs. It includes breathing retraining, stretching, strengthening and increasing your endurance.
You will receive support from our staff, fellow participants, family members and friends. You may also choose to join the C.O.L.D. Club, an Edmonton support group.
Virtual access
The Breathe Easy Program is available in many cities and towns across the province. You can access assessment and education through telehealth technology, and a local healthcare professional will facilitate your exercise.
Referral and assessment
Anyone diagnosed with a chronic lung disease can be referred to the Breathe Easy Program. You will need a recent pulmonary function test.
During a preprogram consultation, a lung specialist (pulmonologist) will assess you and monitor your oxygen levels, heart rate and other values while you walk.
