Villa Caritas is an inpatient care centre. We provide acute psychiatric care for seniors with a range of diagnoses. We centre our care around your needs, empowering you to re-enter the community.
Day programs
The Community Geriatric Psychiatry Program helps seniors recover from mental illness in their own home and community.
Interpretive services
We offer interpretive services for patients and families who prefer to communicate in a language other than English. You may request services in person, through live video or over the phone.
To arrange for an interpreter, speak to a member of your care team.

Villa Caritas has five inpatient mental health units:

- 2A: Alternative level of care
- 3A and 3B: General acute

Seniors’ services
We provide transition services to support your return home after your stay with us. We promote the Destination Home program, and we believe home is the best place to recover after being in our care. From the moment you are admitted, we work with you to plan your return to the community.
Services
Our transition co-ordinator helps:
- ensure you have the support you need to be as independent as possible in your home setting
- ensure you can keep healthy at home
- co-ordinate care planning if home is a continuing care centre
- connect you with community programs and resources

Speech language pathology
We offer services to meet the needs of patients who have problems with swallowing and communication. We work with you to assess your condition and help you manage any issues.

Spiritual care
Our team offers spiritual care services to our patients and families, regardless of faith, background or tradition. We honour each person’s wishes and unique journey.
Chaplain services
Our chaplains are on-site to respond to a wide range of needs. They may:
- support you with end-of-life concerns, including ceremonies, memorial planning and decision-making
- help you explore meaning and purpose in life
- support you during grief and loss
- explore ethical concerns facing patients and staff
- provide religious care (prayer, requests for sacraments or visits from faith leaders)
- help you explore your understanding of God or the Divine
- arrange a quiet space for you in the chapel

Weekends and holidays, 8 a.m.-4:15 p.m.
Our chaplains are on call 24/7 for urgent situations.

Amenities for patients
Laundry
We offer laundry service and clothing labelling. Ask your care team for more information.
Chapel
We have a chapel on the main floor for quiet reflection and prayer. Everyone is welcome to use it, and service times are posted at the door. Learn more about spiritual care at Villa Caritas.
We also have a dedicated chaplain to support you, your family and staff.
Outdoor courtyard
We have a secure courtyard that you can enjoy, with permission from your physician.

Visiting hours
9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Note that patients may be away from the unit for tests or activities. Children are welcome to visit and should be supervised by an adult.
Stop the spread of germs
- For the safety of our patients and residents, we encourage you to clean your hands when you visit. See our guide to clean hands for information on protecting yourself and your loved ones.
- If you’re sick, wait and visit your loved one when you’re feeling better. If you must visit and you’re coughing or sneezing, consider wearing a mask to protect your loved one.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and then discard the tissue. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your upper sleeve or elbow.
- Clean your hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer, especially after coughing or sneezing.
Smoke-free property
Smoking is not allowed anywhere on our property. However, we have nicotine replacement options to keep you comfortable during your stay with us. Ask a member of your care team for more information.
Pet visits
Family pets are welcome to visit. Before you bring a pet:
- ask your loved one’s care team
- give yourself time to fill out some paperwork
- be ready to show your pet’s current vaccination records
- remember to keep your pet on a leash at all times
Public washrooms
There are public washrooms in the main floor lobby, and a key is available at the front desk. Each unit also has one public washroom.
Parking
We offer free visitor parking, including accessible parking stalls, in our main parking lot on the north side of the building.
Cafeteria
The Garden Café at the Misericordia Community Hospital, just a short walk from Villa Caritas, offers hot meals and snacks.
Vending machines are located near the cafeteria entrance and in the emergency department waiting room for after-hour snacks and beverages.

The Garden Café is located on the lower level (Level B) of the hospital.
Admission
Admission criteria
To be admitted to Villa Caritas, you must:
- have acute psychiatric symptoms and/or moderate to severe behavioral challenges
- be medically stable and not need urgent on-site medical support
Voluntary and involuntary admission
We serve both voluntary patients and those admitted under the Alberta Mental Health Act.
You can be admitted under the Alberta Mental Health Act if you:
- have a mental health challenge
- are likely to harm yourself or others or have a severe mental or physical impairment
- cannot be admitted voluntarily
Care plans
We work with you and your family to develop a care plan with clear goals. We also communicate with your healthcare provider as needed to help co-ordinate care.

Our social workers support you during your stay with us and help you address challenges and concerns. We work with you, your family and your decision-makers to ensure you have what you need as you move forward through care.
