St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital is a care centre for people with complex medical issues. We offer compassionate, 24-hour nursing that meets your needs as a whole person. We also provide palliative care and services such as our community day program.
Day programs
Our Day Support program serves adults with physical, emotional or social challenges who live in the community.
Interpretive services
We offer interpretive services for residents and families who prefer to communicate in a language other than English. You may request services in person, through live video or over the phone.
To arrange for an interpreter, speak to a member of your care team.
Long-term care
We offer quality, compassionate care to 188 residents, with 88 beds in semiprivate rooms.
Admission
Long-term care is available once you have been assessed by a case manager. You can choose to be placed with us, but you may have to wait for an opening.
Palliative care
We provide holistic, comfort-based palliative care for people with life-limiting conditions and their families. You may be admitted to our hospice through the regional palliative care program.
Residents who already live with us are supported throughout their life journey in long-term care.

Peritoneal dialysis
Our program serves residents who have kidney conditions. We work with Alberta Health Services’ Northern Alberta Renal Program, home peritoneal dialysis unit and placement services to provide you this care.

Spiritual care
Our team offers spiritual care services to our residents and families, regardless of faith, background or tradition. We honour each person’s wishes and unique journey.
Chaplain services
Our chaplain is on-site to respond to a wide range of needs. They may:
- support you with end-of-life concerns, including ceremonies, memorial planning and decision-making
- help you explore meaning and purpose in life
- support you during grief and loss
- explore ethical concerns facing residents and staff
- provide religious care (prayer, requests for sacraments or visits from faith leaders)
- help you explore your understanding of God or the Divine
- arrange a quiet space for you in the chapel

Suites
We have 100 private and 44 semiprivate rooms. We also have a 14-bed palliative unit.
For every resident, we provide:
- a bed
- a bedside table
- a small wardrobe
- a comfortable chair
Private rooms
Our private rooms are about 16.5 square metres (178 square feet) in size, with minor variations.
Semiprivate rooms
Our semiprivate rooms can include two residents. The rooms are separated by a divider, a desk and a bookshelf. Each room is about 34.9 square metres (382 square feet) in size, with minor variations. Each resident has their own window. Residents share an entry and bathroom.
Common areas
Dining rooms
We have a shared dining room on each of our second and third floors. Both floors also have a room decorated like a living room.
Family rooms
Each unit includes a family room for visiting and a TV lounge. There is one family room on our Butterfly unit and two on our other continuing care units.
Conservatory
Our building includes a conservatory on the main floor with a gas fireplace and an auditorium.
Chapel and multifaith room
Our chapel is open 24 hours a day for quiet meditation. We host weekly Roman Catholic masses and other regularly scheduled ecumenical services.

Special features
Fireplace
The family room on our palliative unit includes a fireplace for warmth and relaxation.
Courtyards
We have an outdoor space that leads into a courtyard with a gazebo and garden. The Chapel Garden has paved pathways where residents can safely walk and enjoy fresh air.
On-site animals
Our main floor is home to birds, and floors two and three each have fish for you, your family and visitors to enjoy.
Neighbourhood
We are located between Ermineskin and Steinhauer parks. Residents with rooms on that side of the building can enjoy watching the parks and activity. There are also walking paths near our centre and children’s playgrounds within walking distance.
We are close to a number of churches, including Southside Church of the Nazarene across the street and Southside Pentecostal Assembly down the block.
We are within walking distance from grocery stores and fast food. We are also a short drive away from South Edmonton Common, one of the largest retail centres in Canada.
There is an Edmonton Transit stop just down the block from our site. You can also walk to the Century Park LRT station from our building.
Community partnerships
We have partnered for over 25 years with our local public school, Steinhauer Elementary. Students from the school sang O Canada when our site was opened and dedicated.
Our local parish, St. Thomas Moore, supports us with a weekly Catholic mass.
Through the Covenant Foundation, we work with London Drugs’ Stockings Stuffers for Seniors program. It pairs local stores with care homes to provide residents with holiday gifts from people in the community.
St. Joseph’s has a strong volunteer program. Volunteers can do a wide range of things at our site.
Amenities for residents
Basic cable
Basic cable is available in your room for a small fee. You are welcome to arrange for extra services with the cable provider.
Laundry
We offer laundry services. Speak to your resident care manager for information. There are also coin-operated washers and dryers on-site.

A full-service hair salon is located on the main floor.

We have an automated external defibrillator (AED) on-site.
Transportation
We have a bus for use for recreational activities. It can easily transport residents who use walkers, wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
Resident and family council
We have a resident and family council that is chaired by a family member. It meets every two months. Every other month, we offer an educational session based on requests from our families. The council is a way to share information, talk about concerns and work together to improve the quality of life at our centre.

Visiting hours
Designated family support persons are welcome anytime.
Our front door is locked overnight; use the phone at the entrance if you wish to visit during those hours.
Stop the spread of germs
- For the safety of our patients and residents, we encourage you to clean your hands when you visit. See our guide to clean hands for information on protecting yourself and your loved ones.
- If you’re sick, wait and visit your loved one when you’re feeling better. If you must visit and you’re coughing or sneezing, consider wearing a mask to protect your loved one.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and then discard the tissue. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your upper sleeve or elbow.
- Clean your hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer, especially after coughing or sneezing.
Smoke-free environment
Smoking is not allowed anywhere on our property, including the parking lot.
Scent-free environment
We know that even slight scents in the air can trigger severe reactions in some people. To help us maintain a healthy environment, do not wear or bring scented products into the care centre.
Parking
We offer paid visitor parking on the west side of the parking lot. You can buy parking through the dispenser located inside our front entrance.
