Cafeterias
Cafeterias are located on the lower level of each hospital. They are open to visitors and patients daily, serving a variety of meal options, snacks, drinks and sandwiches. Hours are subject to change.
There are also vending machines located throughout the hospitals.
Gift and flower shop
The gift and flower shop is open daily. Located in the lobby of each hospital, the shops sell greeting cards, magazines, scratch lottery tickets, snacks, books, batteries, flowers, gifts and some toiletries.
Proceeds go to patient comfort initiatives.
Phones and internet
Cell phones
You can use your cell phone in the hospital, but you cannot use it in the operating room. If you are in a room with more than one patient, please be respectful of the other patients in your room when using your phone.
WiFi
Wireless internet is available through HEALTHSPOT throughout our hospitals.
Smoking
Smoking is not allowed on hospital property or outside grounds. The nonsmoking policy applies to all tobacco-like products, electronic smoking devices and cannabis.
Free nicotine replacement therapy is available to patients to help manage withdrawal. We also offer counseling for those who wish to reduce or quit smoking. For more resources, visit Alberta Quits or call 1.866.710.7848.
Scent-free environment
As a courtesy to other patients and staff, do not use perfumed products or plants during your stay. Some patients and staff have severe allergies to scented items.
Other supports
Spiritual care
Our hospitals offer spiritual care services to all patients, residents and families, regardless of faith, background or tradition. We also support and encourage smudging practices.
Learn more about spiritual care at the Grey Nuns and Misericordia hospitals.
Interpretive services
We offer interpretive services for patients and families who prefer to communicate in a language other than English. You may request services in person, through live video or over the phone.
To arrange for an interpreter, speak to a member of your care team.
Baby-Friendly designation
Our hospitals are Baby-Friendly. This means that we protect, promote and support breastfeeding anywhere and anytime, according to the World Health Organization Baby-Friendly Initiative.
Our teams have special breastfeeding education to help you make informed decisions about feeding your baby. No matter your decision, we believe that all families should have the benefit of:
- skin-to-skin care after birth
- rooming-in, which means that parents and partners are never separated from their babies in-hospital unless there is a medical reason.
We follow the recommendations set by the World Health Organization, Health Canada and the Canadian Pediatric Society, which include:
- babies have breastmilk only for about six months
- babies are also offered nutritious solid food from six months on
- babies should continue to breastfeed for two years and beyond
